Re: 3rd Lt William W Wilkins Co.D 44th MS

Matt,
From my research on the 7th Miss. and the period information I have, it is unlikely that Lt. Wilkins died from hostile action since at the time the only encounters on the way to Shiloh were brief cavalry actions. If he died in Corinth on April 2nd, my guess is he was one of the many who died as a result of horrible camp conditions and poor sanitation in the camps.

His service records should include the detail you are seeking. At that time the 44th was called Blythe's Regiment and was added to Chalmer's Brigade after the battle of Shiloh and fought as part of Chalmer's "High Pressure Brigade" in the battles of Munfordville and Murfreesboro as Blythe's Miss. regt.

The regiment was in the Brigade until surrender. I'm a little concerned that he may be listed in the 44th at that time because the regiment did not exist. However, when the regiment was given a number, the nicknames were changed to Company letters and the files usually list all names for a unit.

Since his company became part of the 44th, it stands to reason that it would be included with the others of thet regiment in the final Company letter designation. Just be sure to look under all names of the unit when you inquire.
