Re: Gen. Mark P. Lowrey's Brigade & Battle of Fran

Mark and Joe,

I am very pleased to hear about your forming a Lowrey's Brigade for the reenacting community in Mississippi. If you haven't read my 47-page abstract that provides an overview of General Mark Perrin Lowrey and Lowrey's Brigade, you can find it on-line at the Tippah County, MS website created by a former colleague and contributor to this message board, Walter Fred Cox, Jr., by clicking on the link at the bottom of this posting:

"Abstract - Lowrey's Brigade Overview"

and then click on the abstract's title:

"History and Battle Flag of the 32nd & 45th Mississippi Infantry Regiment (Field Consolidated); 45th Aka the Third Battalion Mississippi Infantry and 33rd (Hardcastle's) Regiment Missisippi Infantry"

Be patient as it will take awhile to download the abstract.

I have hundreds of pages of unpublished manuscripts and letters written by or about members of S.A.M. Wood's Brigade (Lowrey's predecessor) and Lowrey's Brigade, but many are still in the process of being transcribed for a biographical and historical manuscript on General Mark Perrin Lowrey and Lowrey's Brigade.

One exciting bit of information that may be of interest - a "true daughter" of a member of Wood's and Lowrey's Brigades is still living in California. She is in her mid-90s now, and I have a copy of her father's post-war notebook. Her father was in his 70s when he met and married her mother, who was in her 20s at the time. Her father writes about where and how S.A.M. Wood's Brigade, of which Col. Lowrey was a member at the time as commander of the 32nd Miss., became known as the "Barefoot Brigade" before Lowrey took over command after General Wood resigned.

You may contact me directly by email at RESwinson@aol.com for additional information. Specific questions would be helpful.

In what part of Mississippi do you reside, as I may have sources in your area? Best of luck with your Lowrey's Brigade reenactment group, and I look forward to hearing from you again.

Regards.
