When Forrest outfitted his first unit, he went into Kentucky and smuggled out guns and other equipment, he bought Navy .36s and no sabers. He said sabers just got in the way and made racket. Only his officers and Sgts carried them, and not all of them. His artillery command was led by the young and gallant Capt. John Morton, who had the innate ability to place and use his Artillery, all captured by the way, to great effect. At Johnsonville he not only assisted in the capture of the US vessels but completely destroyed the Union supply depot there to the tune of over $3 million, 1864 dollars, worth of supplies, barges, gunboats, etc. Forrest and his men were probably the greatest fighting force in the War.
