My main thought on Grant was that he sent Sherman to Memphis to take command of the troops that McClernand had raised and sent to Memphis. Grant wanted Sherman to use them to try and take Vicksburg before McClenand arrived thus giving Grant and Sherman all the praise and glory. There is one thing I am not and that is an expert on this.
