Re: Old Town of Belmont, Panola County , ms

Information from The Panola Story Vol XI January-March , 1982 Number 1 page 10

"Belmont Lodge No. 90, Panola County, Belmont-Dispensation 1847, chartered Feb 1848, Location changed to Springport in 1860; name changed to Springport in 1866. Defunct 8 May 1905"

I guess this somewhat confirms the presence of the Masonic Hall in Belmont, I do not find any relatives listed as member until May 1892 when my Greatgrandfather is listed as member of Springport Lodge No. 127.

My GGgrandfather was killed at Springfield Landing, La.(near Port Hudson) July 2, 1863, while being treated for wounds by US doctors in field hospital and dieing there, the union doctors found his Masonic credintials and raised hell for the killing of such fine person. They took up $200 US and sent it through the lines to his family in Lafayette County, Ms It was illegal for Southerners to hold US money at the time therefore it was buried and dug up after the war to pay taxes etc, .
