Dennis I also would liked to have lived during this time in question, had to really have been something with steamboat transportation,and wagons, from place to place taking days rather than minutes or hours for a trip of short distance these days. We have found a lot of Indian artifacts in the Belmont area mostly to the east of the old town of Belmont, my father worked at a sawmill on the Tallahatchie River at Belmont in 1919, they logged with a pushboat and homemade barge, of course that was before the Sardis Dam was built and they had better waterflow much of the time. I have often said I would still like to have a home on the bluff overlooking the Tallahatchie Valley near the Belmont area, but I am sure that will never be. They built a bridge at Belmont in 1880s and it was in place until around 1958 or maybe 1960, it was a long bridge maybe 1/2 mile long built by a iron company in Penn. since then we are on our second concrete bridge which only covers the river with dirt levee on the south to support the road. I just happened to have the builders plate from the old bridge, I don't know if the old bridge was built by a company of locals who charged toll and then maybe later sold to the county, it was creepy old bridge with wide places so the wagons could pass one another.
