Re: Co. "A", 33rd Miss. Regt., "Cumberland Guards"

Alan...Thank you for your kind reply.

These soldiers are all descendents of a GGGGgf John Oxford and wife Elizabeth Russell/McKinney born 1792 and 91,place unkmown.

I found James Wesley and Alan G.Oxford way out in the woods near Vernon,Jackson Parish,La.Austin has an older CSA marker. They came to Jackson Parish with the Wilsons from Mississippi about 1850.You filled in some fascinating details about the soldiers I did not know.

I would suspect, with exception of many in the Indian Territory, that large numbers of those with native-american ancestry would not have been enumerated as such on US Census reports. As one example,Recollect the 1830 Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek Choctaws were given the option of removal to the IT and or remaining and accepting title to one section of land and becoming United States citizens.Am not familiar with specifics of other so called civilized tribe removals.

These particular Oxfords left Tennessee and were in Pickens Co.,Alabama by 1823.Pickens Co.was until early 1831 Choctaw Land. The northern county boundary was Chickasaw. The family was in Winston Co.,Mississippi by 1841 when all the children began to marry but obviously the family kept ties back in Pickens at least until after the war. Were they Indian or not I still do not know. However, there are just enough possibilities to make it interesting.
