The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Co. "A", 33rd Miss. Regt., "Cumberland Guards"

East of the Mississippi members of the Five Civilized Tribes were allowed to renounce tribal allegiance and become U.S citizens. Those still living under tribal allegiance are recorded on the D. H. Cooper rolls of 1855. The Bogue Chitto clan enumerated on that census is associated with the Choctaw tribe. Indians maintaining tribal allegiance (non-taxed) are not recorded on the U.S census. Others of course are on the U.S. census, evidently more appearing on the census after the Civil War (1870) than before.
