I believe I've untangled the maze re his service below.

There was no Capt. Chaffin of Co. E, 10th Alabama Cavalry. There was a Capt. J. N. Chaffin, Co. E, Moreland's Alabama Cavalry, see further below.

Thos. J. Robinson most likely served originally in the 22nd (Warren's) Battalion Alabama Cavalry, which subsequently became Company A, 5th Alabama Cavalry, Hillard's Legion, organized Sept. 1, 1862, the 5th Cavalry Battalion was detached and transferred to the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment, 30 Dec 1862. His original company subsequently became Co. D, 10th Ala. Cav. Jan. 1, 1864 and in which he never served.

Tenth Confederate Cavalry Regiment

The 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment was organized at Murfreesboro, by consolidating the battalions of Col. Charles T. Goode and Lt. Col. M. N. Slaughter*--the latter being the cavalry of Hilliard's Legion, which had passed through the Kentucky campaign. Brigaded under General Pegram, the 10th fought at Monticello, losing 8 killed, 19 wounded, and 62 captured. After operating in East Tennessee, the regiment raided into Kentucky and fought in a half dozen severe conflicts, losing 160 men in all. Surprised at Jimtown, the regiment lost about 50 men, mostly captured. At Chicamauga the 10th fought under Gen'l Forrest and again lost heavily. The regiment was often on picket and outpost duyt. Placed in Wade's (afterwards Hume's and Robinson's) Brigade, Kelly's Division, with the First and Third Confederate and a Georgia and Louisiana regiment, the 10th lost heavily at Resaca and New Hope, then performed arduous duty during the Dalton-Atlanta campaign. It was in Wheeler's last raid, moving as far as Saltville, Virginia. Having returned to assist Gen'l John Bell Hood, the 10th proceded to the Carolinas and was engaged at Bentonville. It surrendered with Johnson's army, 300 strong.

Hilliard's Legion

Hilliard's Legion was organized at Montgomery, 25 June 1862, with one artillery, one cavalry, and three infantry battalions, consisting of about 3,000 men, all engaged in training and drill until the 8th of July. On that date, the Legion was transported through Atlanta to Chattanooga where it remained about 3 weeks. Then, Hilliard's Legion was armed and continued with training. [The 5th Cavalry Battalion was detached within months and transferred to the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment, 30 Dec 1862. The artillery arm, the Fourth Battalion, was also detached. Part of this battalion, Company "C", was redesignated as an independent artillery [Kolb's] battery.]

Moreland's Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
Moreland's Cavalry Battalion was organized in August, 1863, at Russellville, Alabama, with men raised in Frankiln County. Assigned to General Roddey's Brigade, the four-company battalion skirmished in North Alabama and Tennessee during the winter and spring of 1864-1864. Later it moved to Mississippi and took an active part in the fight at Tishomingo Creek. On May 18, 1865, it surredned at Iuka. The field officers were Lt. Col. M. D. Moreland and Major J. N. George.

MORELAND'S BATTALION
ALABAMA CAVALRY

Moreland's battalion was included in Roddey's brigade and was
in north Alabama and Tennessee during the greater part of the
winter and spring of 1863-64, serving for a time in Hannon's
brigade.

It fought at Tishomingo creek, June, 1864, and was attached to
General Maury's army, serving in central and northern Alabama.

It was paroled at Iuka, May 18 1865.
