I do not find a record of him in the 1st Mississippi Cavalry.

There are only two muster rolls of his company in which he is listed, however, the Record of Events for his regiment provides some information on casualties suffered during his time in service. They were also involved in other engagements, see:

Company E Stationed at College Hill Station, Mississippi, March-April 1864.

April 12.— Company E engaged in the battle of Fort Pillow, Tennessee at which place Captain Middleton was painfully but not dangerously wounded in the left arm.

Private James L Simmons was killed on the same day, April 12, 1864, while gallantly storming the fortifications.
