39th MS Inf. at Surrender

I am seeking opinions on some of the statements my great (x2) grandfather, Francis Marion Box, made in his Confederate Pension application. He was a member of the 39th Mississippi Infantry, Co. D (Newton Hornets). He writes in his pension application to the state of Louisiana in 1909 that he was never discharged but served until the end of the war. He also states that he was not a prisoner. I am curious about his statement that his location at the surrender was "east of Natchez, MS." From what I've been able to find about the 39th, it was captured at Fort Blakely and any that escaped would have been surrendered by LTG Richard Taylor at Citronelle, AL. Citronelle and Mobile are both "east of Natchez" but that seems like such an odd description of either of those places. Does anyone have any information or opinions about the location? I appreciate any input you can provide.

Gary
