It is completely possible that he was injured going in to Tennessee. E.M. Riley Co. A 39th Miss. was separated from his regiment as were many others on the march from Atlanta to Florence in Oct. 1864. He was assigned to 1st Consolidated Confederate Reserve at Grenada. his Capt. and Major commanded the unit. His unit travelled to Pascagoula to stop Yankee raiders from Baton Rouge along the Mobile & Ohio railroad as they were going to Mobile. When that raid failed to materialize the unit returned to n. Mississippi where they fought at Egypt Station. at some point during this time (Dec. 1864 to Feb.1865) men from the 39th were reunited with these men of the Reserve corps. all did not go to Mobile for the final battle at Ft. Blakely. So it is entirely possible your man could have been anywhere in Mississippi when placed on the surrender roll.
