Re: 14th MS soldier turns Galvanized Yankee

Alan, I think you mean the 11th OVC. I rechecked my post and I stated:
"It is interesting that none of the former Confederates thus far have shown up on the roster of the 11th Ohio Cavalry however they were there as evidence of some of their Federal pension records. So far I see 26 such former Camp Chase prisoners with the 11th OVC. The former Confederates must have had their hands full because of the Sand Creek Massacre in Colorado. The Cheyenne were on the War Path as of late November 1864."

The only thing I have access to now is the roster of the 11th OVC. That is why I stated that they are not showing up in the 11th OVC even though they were. For example there is a former Confederate soldier named Ephraim Calhoun of the 52nd Virginia Infantry. He too is going to enlist in the 11th OVC from Camp Chase. His wife received a Federal pension in 1868 because he died as a Federal soldier even though his date of death was reported as July 7, 1863. All of the former Confederates swallowed the eagle before entering the service of the 11th.

Using google enter the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and it states that 40 former Confederates entered service from the Camp Chase Prison. But going through the Camp Chase records I only count 26 such Confederates and their names and former Confederates units are listed. Many of them were from Kentucky and Tennessee. There was also listed one Confederate civilian.

The only way I can determine if they were with the 11th at this time is through their pension records. And that takes a while. Why they were not listed in the roster remains a mystery. Perhaps they were trying to protect their identity if captured by Confederates? I don't think you would see any of them after the War at a Confederate reunion with their former comrades.

It appears that the former Confederates were with two companies of the 11th OVC. The 11th was mustered out of service I believe at Fort Laramie, Wy., in 1866. Perhaps some of them stayed on with other US Cavalry units just not sure at this time.

It also might be possible that they show up with the 11th Cavalry Regiment as the 11th OVC was also known as. They were also known as the Rocky Mountain Cavalry.

It does appear that many if not all of the former Confederates were soldiers of the Confederate draft. At this time I can the majority were.

I am doing short bio's of all of the Confederate dead at the Camp Chase Cemetery. It's easy to get side-tracked as with the case of these former Confederates. However when I do run across something of interest I do not hesitate to post the information.

I used the Civil War Database as a source for the roster of the 11th OVC. Thx Dennis
