I am trying to compile a list of the men who were paroled at the end of the war in the consolidated 9th Mississippi Infantry Regiment at Greensboro, NC. The men paroled were the remnants of the Mississippi “High Pressure” Brigade consisting of the 7th, 9th, 10th 41st and 44th Infantry Regiments and the 9th Battalion of Sharpshooters. The consolidated regiment had 10 companies plus regimental officers and musicians. Each of the new companies seem to have been made up of men from only one or two of the original regiments. Company D of the new 9th Regiment consisted of 33 men from the 9th Battalion Sharpshooters plus men primarily from Company F of the 44th Mississippi Infantry. I can determine the original company/regiment of all of the men, with one exception. There is a 1st Lieutenant Simon Mayer listed on the surrender roll with a date of rank of April 8, 1865. I have not found a match for this man in any of the old High Pressure Brigade units. In my research, I found that the names on the surrender rolls can differ (sometimes significantly) from names shown on other service records, so the actual name may differ from the name listed on the roll. Another complication is that some men were promoted or demoted after the date of the last available service records, most of those records ending in the fall of 1864. Lt. Mayer may not have been made an officer until toward the end of the war, but he likely was at least a sergeant before being promoted. Does anyone out there have an idea of who this “Simon Mayer” is and in what company/regiment he served during most of the war?
