I think I solved the puzzle of 2nd Lt. Emmett Weaver who surrendered in Company D of the 9th Mississippi Regiment at Greensboro NC on 1 May 1865. It turns out there is a separate 9th Miss Regiment record for J. E. Weaver. This record file says J. E. Weaver surrendered in Co. D of the 9th Miss Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant. These records also show he was enlisted in (old) Company H of the 9th Miss. at age 17 on 27 Mar 1961 in Panola, Miss. by Col. J. R. Chalmers. After a year, he re- enlisted in (new) Co. E, but the last record in the 9th Miss Regiment file, other than the record on surrendering in Company D at the end of the war, is dated 31 Mar 1862. Around June 1862 he transferred to Company B of the 9th Battalion Sharp Shooters. In the Sharp Shooters, he was appointed Battalion Sergeant Major and assistant adjutant on 5 Jan 1864 and that is the last rank/status in the final 9th Battalion Sharp Shooters records for August 1864. Weaver’s records are a bit confusing since the surrender record cards for the other 9th Battalion Sharp Shooters soldiers who surrendered in Greensboro are with their 9th Battalion Sharp Shooters records, while Weaver’s surrender record is in a separate record file under “Emmitt Weaver” with 9th Miss Regiment records. The same 9th Miss. Regiment surrender record file says that Weaver signed an Oath of Allegiance to the United States in Nashville on 9 June 1865. The Oath document says he was from Desoto County, Miss, was 5' 8 tall and had a fair complexion, light hair and hazel eyes.
