Simon Mayer of Natchez was originally a member of the 10th Mississippi Infantry, but by the end of the war he was a Major and AAG serving on the staff of Brigadier General Jacob H. Sharp. Standing only 4 feet, 8 inches tall, Mayer was known as "The Little Mississippi Major," and "Too Short To Shoot."
