Danny,

I believe the 60th had a fairly good reputation. They participated in several vital campaigns before being assigned to A.W. Reynolds' Brigade, where they were assigned with the 58th, in the fall of 1863. A point to note about these units, however. The Brigade to which the 58th and 60th belonged, which also included the 54th and 63rd Virginia regiments, got a bad rap at Missionary Ridge where it was alledged they broke first. This was not the case. Palmer's Brigade, Formerly A.W. Reynolds', also led the advance of the Army at Columbia and Spring Hill durig Hood's ill fated campaign.During the Battle of Franklin, the brigade was assigned to guard the ammunition train, an extremely hazardous duty during the Civil War.It must be remembered that while this brigade has been maligned by writers and historians, they were the rear guard for the Army of Tennessee during its retreat in Hood's 1864 Tennessee campaign as well as the rear guard for the Army during its retreat through the Carolinas. It has been my experience that the job of rear guard is not entrusted to substandard units. In April, 1865 after many units were consolidated, the remnants of this brigade were still performing rear guard actions to cover the Army's retreat.
Pretty important duty for troops who some think were not motivated, eh?
