Mr. Long, Yes, I know the island in Marshall well as I played many High School baseball and football games on her. This was a rest stop for the men from Buncombe co. while on their march to Bartly Island down the old stage coach road (Buncombe Turnpike). The men from Northwestern Madison co., Warm Springs, Spring Creek, Paint Rock and I am not sure about the company from Cocke Co. probably mustered with these Buncombe companies as they were inscripted in Marshall, I believe in August 62 and then they continued on down river for another 25 or so miles. Can one imagine, marching some 50 miles from Asheville to Warm Springs? The boys from the Warm Springs area had to march to Marshall and then turn around and march back. They weren't happy campers I'm sure but this was a piece of cake considering the horrors that would befall these simple country boys later on.

Thanks, Jim
