64th NC Inf , Company N ?

Am researching Hamton McGill who served in the 64th NC Inf in the fall of 1863. He is listed as serving in Company "N". I have been unable to find any record of Co. N., so I did a quick research on the " 2nd Lieutenant Murrell" who enrolled him, and found that he too is listed in Co. N. I was once advised that the Co. N may have been a transcription error, which of course is not at all unlikely, but then I found somewhere that the 64th had 4 inf companies ( perhaps N?) that never got mustered, but saw service as "state troops". Any ideas on how I could find out more about this Company N and what may have befallen them??? Kinda lost on this one, and not good enough at the research to get over it! (also too stubborn to give up!!!!)
