Hollywood and the Civil War

While keeping an eye on my grandson today I had the opportunity to do some channel surfing on the TV. I came upon an old film from 1947 entitled "Romance on Rosy Ridge". The story dealt with Missouri soldiers, of both sides, returning from the war and how the community dealt with the emotions of the late conflict. The storyline , set in June, 1865, has a young soldier returning and aiding a Misssouri hill family in rebuilding their farm. The farmer , a former Reb just returned from the war and with a lot of rancor against Yankees, is suspicious of the stranger even though the man is helpful and has no animosity. The family is waiting for their eldest son, of whom they have had no word for two years, to return from the war. After all his anger toward Yankees, the old farmer finally learns from the stranger that he was a Union soldier and his aid to the family is a promise he made to his best friend, the family's missing son, who was also a Union soldier, who had been mortally wounded two days before the war's end. During the whole time the family had assumed their son had joined the Confederate Army. This film was well done and had depth. I recommend it, to see a good story on reconstruction and healing.
