My father fired 5" guns on a destroyer in WWII. Do you suppose those were "38's"? I have an article about one engagement from the local town of the shipyard (Orange,TX) titled, "Destroyer Dyson Blasts Hell (sorry Jamie) out of Jap Ships". They sunk four out of 6 and severly damaged another.
