A lot of that movie was shot in Mississippi and Arkansas. It wasn't really meant to be super authentic and for the actors involved was rather low budget and not well managed. The script left a lot to be desired.

I am trying to remember the house that they blow up as being the McClain House in the Battle of First Manassas. It was actually an authentic structure at either the Pea Ridge or maybe the Praire Grove Battlefields in Northern Arkansas. They built an addition on to that structure and promised the parks people that they would not damage the original building, but they use to much explosives, and had to repair the damages to the parks property.

We used to go down and play "rebels and yanks" on the Reader Railroad at Reader, Arkansas where all the railroad scenes were shot. And were Virgilia's (Kirstie Alley) husband Grady was killed. A friend of mine was the soldier that was in that scene.

All in all in my opinion it was a corney movie. But for the times it was something that put a shot in the arm of Civil War Re-enacting for the 125th Anniversary reenactments, that paved the way for such movies as "Gettysburg", "Glory", and "Gods and Generals" and a stock footage for who knows how many Historical programs clips.
