Re: Not All Bondage was with iron chains.

Stan, Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure that I had worded my question in a manner that was understandable, but you got it?

As a Clause to the Constitution this "Slavery Clause" would have applied to ALL indebtedness no matter of race.

The Thirteenth Amendment, which repealed and replaced this clause, actually only redefined and limited this indebtedness to that which is owed to the state due to criminal conviction, such as fines and prisons.

So as I read it, Kit Carson was a runaway slave indentured by the debt of his apprentise obligations.

This is exactly the type of situation I was looking for. Although, I feel like the practise, in the north, when a lot deeper than just apprentiseship abandonment.

As you asked 'When did they do away with Debtor's Prison?'. As I read the Thirteenth Amendment, had it not specifically limited Indebtness to that owed to the State because of Criminal Convictions, we would still have Debtor's Prisons.

Was the threat of Debtor's Prison the reason that most northern factory worker kept on working under such awful conditions instead of changing jobs? So were they really "Free" of their employeers domination?
