Frank, you may have hit on something. Lee said he would only raise his sword to defend Virginia. Maybe he was outside his parameters when fighting elsewhere, without even realizing it. I read somewhere that lee was not in the best of health when Gettysburg went down. He,of course, still suffering from the damage to his wrists when Travelor shied and caused him to fall, and he was said to have diarhea, and maybe angina at that time.
