Having just fought Second Manassas at the end of August, I would think there was more straggling than deserting. Men were tired and hungry I suspect. Didn't Jackson bring Hill up on charges for being too slow? I'm not sure which Hill it was. I certainly understand Lee's concern, whether they were deserters or stragglers. Stan
