Tone and approach
In Response To: Re: Hijacking a thread ()

Ken,

For law enforcement, having a "take charge" or authoritative presence is absolutely necessary.

I actually don't mind assertiveness in discussion. In fact, I think it is necessary for serious conversation and debate. I don't think anyone needs to apologize or beg permission to voice their opinion. Jump in there, say what you think, let others hear your thoughts.

Being confident and assertive is not always being a bully. This touches on my comment to Dennis in a thread above about people taking questions or challenges to their posts personally. That can be difficult (for everyone), because our opinions and views can be so personal. But vigorous and assertive discussion can be quite fun and educational. You and I can sit here and critique each other's posts back and forth, pointing out errors in the other's arguments and stating why our respective opinions hold more weight, and then smile, shake hands, and BS over a couple of beers.

I used the sports analogy before, but I really do see a comparison...not so much that discussion is a "game," but that participants can give it their "all" on the field and walk away with a sportsmanlike respect for each other for a great match.
