That's a real weird area. You kind of get the "willies" whenever you are ther. A NPS maintenance guy told me the story before my wife and I trekked down to Ellwood. The property is gated off but if you want to do some walking you can go down there. Ellwood Plantation belonged to Reverand Tucker Lacy's brother. When Lacy discovered Jackson's arm in the pile of limbs that had been amputated he had it sent to Ellwood to be buried in the family cemetery. During the Wilderness Campaign a Union officer (I don't think it was Meade even though he did use Ellwood as his headquarters) questioned the story of Jackson's arm being buried there. He sent a detail to have it exhumed. When he discovered that it was indeed Jackson's arm he was mortified and embarrassed at having doubted the story. He sent to New York for a small gold casket and the arm was reburied in the ornate container. So the story goes. There is a marker there, whether the gold casket is there is pure speculation.
