Re: Locating WBTS Soldier's Unit info

Dear Kevin,
My sincere apology for having confused you. Let me see if I can explain a little better why I was asking these questions.

I understand you are searching for the Civil War unit your ancestor, James Narcessus "Brig" Young, served in. Often, a good starting point for finding the unit of a Civil War ancestor is finding where he lived in 1860, just before the start of the war. Most units were raised from particular areas and their place of residence can help narrow the search.

James N. Young was born in 1839. This would make him about 21 in 1860 and possibly still unmarried (maybe living at home with his parents). Thus, the answer to who his parents and siblings were can help in deciding which of several people named Young, aged about 21, whose names were recorded in the census as J. or James or J.N. or maybe even Brig or B. may be your man in the census. The other people listed in the household can help narrow down the search results, if you know who James' parents and siblings were.

It seems to me it's more probable James Young's service was in the Union Army, simply because of where he was born and died; but it's not an absolute certainty. The Union's records are more intact than the CSA's and that makes the success of your search more probable.

If you should be able to obtain further information on James' family, please don't hesitate to send it to me. There's no guarantee that I can find him on the 1860 census, but I'd be most happy to try.

Regards and best of luck in your search,
Penny
