Who is "we" in the "we had it they didn't"?

If you mean the South had the "money," I would say that is only partially true. Everyone knows how better supplied, industrialized, and economically capable the North was to carry out a war compared to the Confederacy. The South was known even before the war for being a relatively poor area (despite having some of the wealthiest people).
