I may be missing something here - what statements of mine are contradictory?

Straw man argument that misrepresents what I said. To restate my point, you didn't have to hold title to slaves yourself to be closely tied to the economic and social status slaveowning implied - your family was tied to it, as were employees you helped support, etc. Do you deny that many thousands of "poor white trash" (your words, not mine) aspired to be slaveowners some day, given that owning a slave meant you had at least a small measure of economic success? Note wording: "many thousands", not "all."

I imagine the goal of the poor whites in the North was to have enough food and shelter, and maybe, someday, make a better life for themselves and their families - kinda like those in the South.
