Admiral Farragut 24 Apr 1862

Can someone help me understand just how he did this? do you mean to tell me he captured New Orleans and only lost one ship? I had no idea New Orleans was captured only 1 year into the war. What 2 forts did he simply sail by? where they manned? Thanks, Mark

Union Admiral David Farragut leads a flotilla
Union Admiral David Farragut leads a flotilla past two Confederate forts on the Mississippi River south of New Orleans. Moving at 2:00 a.m., Farragut lost one ship but successfully ran past the strongholds. He scattered some Confederate ships and sailed to New Orleans the next day, capturing one of the Confederacy's major cities with barely a shot fired.
