1. Richmond's disregard for almost any requist for support in material and men in the West. Where as in New Orleans case did not need to be a large amount to defend the City. Lack of heavy guns, lack of ships, lack of men, were evident.

2. The failure to organize the command structure in the defense of New Orleans under one qualified and energetic general officer. The plans of defense was left to seperate water forces and land forces were under the command of two ineffective officers of no real note in reliability.

3. The weather helped the Union Navy with deeper water that made the Confederate obstructions useless.

In summary Richmond blew it.
