Re: Abe Lincoln on "The Rifleman"

"ole Lucas was a former Union soldier"

That explains why the North won. Next time somebody seeks my opinion on why the South lost I can now state beyond arguing it was because they had ole Lucas :-)

Never saw "Yancy Derringer". Before my time, I was born in 1961. I just went to Wikipedia to read up on it and it sure seems like a show I would enjoy. Hey, maybe we can start arguing over who was tougher... Lucas McCain or Johnny Yuma. I bet we could really stir things up with a thread on that. Maybe even Mike Gerow would come out of retirement to weigh in LOL

LOL, why the North won!

Ha! You gaffed me with them old-time TV westerns, a real weakness (one of tooooo many). Seen a lot of them recently, but only Maverick holds up with time. All the rest seem rather dated and hokey, including Cheyenne, Jim Bowie, 26 Men and Have Gun Will Travel.

Been years since I saw the Rifleman with Chuck Connors, a minor league baseball star who played for the Wrigley-owned Los Angeles Angels in the 1950s before they went to the AL. (At that time, they were Pacific Coast League, along with the San Diego Padres, who are in the bigs now but only play like they're not.) One time Connors hit a dinger and did hand-springs around the base pads! And then there was the old elementary school joke, circa 1960: "What's green and carries a rifle?" Ans: Mucous McCain.

(Sorry, didn't see this string and replied to the Yancy Derringer thing farther down the line.)

I loved Yancy Derringer and also "The Rebel" with Nick Adams, who committed suicide. His tombstone has a silhouette of a kepi on it, and if I'm not mistaken, it says "The Rebel" on it too. You can probably find a pic through "Find a Grave."

I still remember the words to the theme song, written and performed by Johnny Cash. And I remember that episode where Johnny is up in the overhead of the McLean house about to kill Grant. But when he hears the sheer generosity of the surrender terms he got all misty and decides not to do it. Wise decision, leading to many more episodes...LOL
