It also sounds like that Major Anderson with only 80 odd men in his command had been working on the defenses of Fort Moultrie against the citizens of South Carolina for a long. Probably for several weeks. Certainly far longer than the 6 days between South Carolina actually passing their Ordanace of Secession and Anderson abandoning Fort Moultrie and occuping Fort Sumter. I wonder if this was all done by Anderson's authority alone? This engineers report was not submitted to Anderson but to the War Department as justification that Fort Moultrie was defended to the best of the Garrison's abilities.
I also wonder what kind of assualt Anderson was expecting from the people of Charleston that would overcome these defenses in such depth? And how much danger he and his garrison was actually in at Fort Moultrie. It sounds like the people of Charleston had more to fear from Anderson, than Anderson had to fear from the South Carolina Militia, or the citizens of Charleston.
I wonder what the percentages of casualities would have been suffered by a regiment of South Carolina Militia attacking against such defensive measures? Certainly no "Mob" of angry citizens from Charleston would have taken such a fortification as well defended as this. Had such a mob even tried, the Bloodshed in trying to take Moultrie may have caused the south to realize the extent of warfare and may have prevented the War from ever starting.
