In fact Dupont built his plant with these accidents in mind. all the Manufacturing building in his plant were built with a "Blowout wall". In other words the building had three strongly built usually stone walls and the fourth was of light wood construction so it would blow out and relieve the pressure of blast and the majority of the building would be saved so it could be rebuilt.
I don't know what he did about the people inside in such cases.
