Also, the turmoil and violence in Kansas and Missouri that preceded the event in 1859. Perhaps the War started before Lincoln's election, before Secession, before Ft. Sumpter. There was a cultural and political schism between the North and South dating back to the first American Revolution. Lincoln's election was like throwing gasoline on a fire. Botts is just trying to tell us who furnished the gasoline.
