This is not a personal story, but it did happen in Georgia. In the late 1800s a man from Indiana bought a thousand acres of land in Ben Hill County, Ga. Because of economic depression, he wanted to start a colony for Union veterans to start a new life. As it happened, they were joined and supported by Confederate veterans, and the town of Fitzgerald was born. Alternate streets were named for Union and Confederate Generals, as were those in Evergreen Cemetery, named for the one in Gettysburg.
