They could not serve on a jury, could not make a contract, could not serve in the militia, could not marry, could not vote or hold office, could not send their children to a public school. The goal of the Whigs had always been emancipation and then removal of all African Americians. Most Republicans (including Abraham Lincoln) endorsed these goals and laws of the kind mentioned above.
