I believe Northerners wanted to maintain the status quo, which was a path towards subjugation of the South. That is why they elected Lincoln and other Republicans. I do not believe many people in the North or the South considered the election would result in war and I am undecided whether many people thought that Lincoln's election would result in Secession of several Southern states.
