Oaths often lost meaning. For example, at Rock Island P.O.W. camp many Reb soldiers crossed the line and enlisted in the Union army to serve out west as "Galvanized Yankees". Some were rejected for service on physical grounds and were left behind. The Confederate P.O.W.s who had remained loyal began recruiting these men to come back and renounce their renouncing their oaths that they took when they joined the Confederate army which was seen as being unfaithful to their country by those who remained loyal to the union in the first place. Makes sense? It happened though.
