George....Okinawa is where thousands of Japanese military and civilians committed suicide. Most civilians did jump off the cliffs with many women holding babies in their arms after having thrown their younger children over the cliffs before they themselves jumped. Many Japanese soldiers also jumped over the cliffs, but the majority of the Japanese soldiers died while make suicidal charges into machine gun fire.

I have personally viewed some of the bones that still remained at the bottom of the cliff when i was there in 1946.

The high loss of American and Japanese lives on Okinawa was one of the considerations that led to President Harry S. Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb.

Please pardon me for violation of the instructions to only make post concerning the Civil War. Please do not use my post to "chase rabbits" into this WWII posts.
