Along those lines, I did not know until reading newspapers dated October 2, 1860, that slavery was contrary to the laws of Mexico. Even though Texas was subject to those laws, settlers from the South simply ignored those laws. At least that's what the newspaper tells us.

Maybe everything wasn't about slavery (I included an article about a young English woman who fell in love with a man who turned out to be another woman, and a married woman at that). It's a real task to read anything involved in the political campaign of 1860 that isn't relateded to slavery. Those looking for debates over the tarrif or some other topic will hurt their eyes -- they'll hurt their eyes searching for it.
