I had this statement just a bit off, not accurately remembering the correct sequence of events when I wrote the post. Hindman was a friend of Cleburne and they were both shot, and Hindman was assasinated, but it had nothing to do with the issue of arming slaves.
Cleaburne and Hindman were both shot in the streets at Helena, but the shooting of C&H happened before the War, not during, and the assasination of H happened a few years after the War.
He was however an outspoken supporter of the Cleburne Memorial, may have helped in its development, and made many enemies promoting the idea.
