I know what you mean, I just left a site at Arkansas Post both Indian and Civil War, but at least the Phd Archeologists there would admit they knew nothing about identifying civil war artifacts. Looking for Indian and finding civil war messed them up, they had to reorganize their site plan. At least some of these archeologist and some museums here in Arkansas are calling on me to help id their collections. in many cases they don't even know if it's civil war or modern. Many archeologist still have a big hang up on medal detectors, but some are starting to see they have their place in a controlled environment. Just don't mention the word medal detector until you feel them out. The Arkansas Post bunch did bring in some medal detectors, I did liked that.
