As to George M. Thomas, the engagement in which he was killed was in all probability southwest of Petersburg at Boydton Plank Road, otherwise known as Burgess' Mill, which was fought on 27 Oct 64 between elements of the Federal army and MGEN Henry Heth's infantry divison and most of the cavalry Corps under LGEN Wade Hampton. There was action north of the James on the same date, but the Holcombe Legion Infantry never operated on that side of the river after June, 1864. The Confederate forces thwarted an attmept by the Federals to flank their right, and shortly after this engagement both armies went into winter quarters.
