Re: Thomas family from Spartanburg

If Elisha/Elihu was able to travel following his release, he undoubtedly was sent home on furlough for thirty days, and thus probably rode the train back to South Carolina. It was customary to give the paroled prisoners a furlough; usually, although they were on parole, they had not yet been exchanged, and under the terms of their parole, could not take up arms until propertly exchanged. So it was in the interest of the Government to send them home for a short furlough, first, to reduce the strain on the overburdened commissary, and to give the men a chance to "recruit" their health, which after seven months in Point Lookout, probably needed a lot of recruiting. His CSR file may give you some clues: if he does not show up on the Appomattox paroles, or on another POW list, you will probably find that he gave his parole at either Charlotte or Greenville, being from Spartanburg District.
