The South Carolina in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Estill's Company, Arsenal Guard, Charleston, S

The organization date and term should appear in any service file, but the twelve month term seems questionable to me. Companies organized under the Local Defense act were never deployed as military units or given orders, nor were members paid. If organized for CS service under any authority other than the Local Defense law, after the summer of 1861 the Secretary of War would never have accepted a tender of service for less than three years or the war.

It's possible that U.S. War Dept. clerks filed documents concerning this officer's subsequent with the Local Defense Company. Based on other information you provided, its also quite likely that this officer was commissioned by the State of South Carolina. Those documents may be found at the state archives.

Documentation for Confederate naval officers and sailors can be disappointing.

Charleston newspapers should include notices concerning drill, company assemblies and other activities of Capt. Estill in the city.
