(1) Capt. Estill's Company, A.D. Estell Capt., Arsenal Guard, appears on a Roll of the organization named above. Roll dated Charleston S.C. Feb 18, 1862. ["This company which was also known as Captain Estill's Company of South Carolina Local Defense, was formed about February 18, 1862, or workmen in the Confederate States Arsenal for the defense of the Arsenal and City of Charleston, SC for the term of twelve months. From Copy (made in the M.S. Office, War Department, in October 1904)of an original record borrowed from Col M.P. Tribble. Commissioner of Confederate Rolls, Columbia, SC -- M.8.? 27400. Roll Indorsed: "Accepted and rec'd Feb'y 19 1862 V.R. Fish A and I Gen"]
(2) Charleston SC July 11 1863; Officer State Government ????
A.D. Estill Capt. PCSA Requests that detached Soldiers whose Companies are out of this District be placed under his command. [Endorsement forwarded in absence of and by command of B/Gen Ripley].
(3) Following on War Department, The Adjutant General's Office, Washington letter head. "The records show that A.D. Estill served as Captain of a Company of South Carolina Infantry, Local Defense, (Arsenal Guard, Charleston, S.C.). This company was formed about February 18, 1862, or workman in the Confederate States Arsenal for the defense of the Arsenal and City of Charleston, South Carolina, for the term of 12 months. On July 11, 1863, he signed a document as Captain of the Arsenal Guard. Other records show that he served as Assistant Superintendent of State Gunboat Construction at Charleston, South Carolina. On December 29, 1863, he was shown as a Paymaster's Clerk, Confederate States Navy. No later record found. It is suggested as a possibility that additional information relative to the above named might be obtained from the Office of Naval Records and Library, Navy Department, Washington, D.C.
