The South Carolina in the Civil War Message Board

Re: William Kelley Cook's Civil War Service

Union and Lancaster are adjacent counties. It could be that the family moved a mile or less to live just over the state line. They had no idea that such a simple move would represent such a great puzzle to their descendants!

Sometimes two or more service records are indexed under one name. I've seen one example where three men's service records (same last name) were all in one file. Without looking at these records, I can't say for sure, but Captain Hilton did command Co. "E", 22nd South Carolina Regiment, and Cook's account sounds authentic. It could also be that his is one of the service files War Department clerks left in Unfiled Papers and Slips. We could certainly check this and determine the truth of the matter.
