I read William Garrett Piston's book "Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant" and thought it was well done and well documented. Earlier today posted a message on the News & Views site asking if Longstreet were still considered a traitor and persona non grata amongst the Southern historians and reenactors of today. Perhaps it was the way I referred to the book's premises as being possibly upsetting to the "church of Lee" that turned people off. 24 views to the message, but no responses. I've been in hot water over there lately, so maybe that had something to do with it too.
But my question remains, how is Longstreet generally viewed today? Will he ever make it completely out of the doghouse as far as most Southern historians are concerned? Is JL still being blamed for losing Gettysburg and by extension the war? Is there a big Lee vs. Longstreet scism in the Southern ranks?
